Jean Marie's Dragon*Con Schedule

One of the best things about being a writer is being able to post a convention schedule. Not only is it a measure of your achievement, it also means you’ll be seeing your long distance friends. And when the schedule happens to be for Dragon*Con, well, let the party begin!

I keep wanting to go to Dragon Con, but between the cost of reg, travel, and hotel, just can't hope to afford it right now. Sigh. So jealous! Have a great time :)

Thanks {{{Moondancer}}}! It was fabulous. Now, though, I'm so far behind, and I still have a ton of things to post: photos, interviews, blogs. Aaaaaaaaagh! But I wouldn't miss it for the world. :-)

I'm really curious about the non-fiction panel. What was that about? Any key tips?

So glad that Noony commented on this and reminded me.

Can you update us on the con some coming Tuesday or open Thursday? Please? *Puppy Eyes* :)

It was a bit of a disaster, Noony. Two of the panelists showed up 20 minutes late--not their fault, but it meant the topic got seriously skewed.

Essentially, the drill is build up a clips file then decide how you want to use it: as a hobbyist/subject matter expert, or for profit. The last is problematic at a time when so many folks in the news/periodical business are losing their jobs or willing to work for $3/article on a content farm. (And now we have to worry about computers writing sports stories!)

About the only full-time nonfiction writing jobs that an outsider (i.e., someone without prior connections in the media biz) can get are local, state and federal government jobs and nonprofits. In other words, jobs that entail a lot of writing but don't provide the glamour of a roving reporter. (Not that it was ever that glamourous, but I digress. LOL)

Things are better if you're looking to establish yourself as an expert and view the money as gravy. Over time, an expert will build contacts (sometimes by literally giving away the work--which would have Harlan Ellison spinning in his grave if he weren't still alive) and get paying work. That's what I did when I was working for the fed, and it's still paying dividends. But I earned my keep as a government employee, not as a hobbyist or freelancer.

X, I hope to post a T13 on the con this week. Which means there will be pictures. :-)
